How to list freelance work on a resume

Updated , 4 min read

Group freelance work under one ongoing role when you have several short or related engagements. Give a major, relevant engagement its own entry when its scope justifies the space. In either format, identify what you provided, who it served, and what verifiable result or deliverable followed.

Freelance work is professional experience, so it belongs in your Experience section with accurate dates and a clear label for the working relationship. All roles, clients, dates, and results in this guide are illustrative.

Choose the right structure

A grouped entry works when you serve several clients, projects are short, or confidentiality limits detail. Use a functional title such as “Freelance UX designer” or “Independent bookkeeping consultant,” describe your focus, and select representative bullets.

A separate entry helps when one engagement is highly relevant, involved substantial ownership, or produced a distinct deliverable. Label it “Contract,” “Freelance,” or another accurate local term; do not imply permanent employment.

Each entry should make these details easy to find:

  • Your functional title and working relationship
  • The client name, permitted description, or confidentiality label
  • Accurate dates and relevant location information
  • Selected actions, deliverables, and verified evidence
  • A portfolio link when samples are approved and useful

Protect confidential information

Respect contracts, privacy obligations, and client preferences. If you cannot name a client, use a truthful description such as “regional healthcare provider under confidentiality agreement.” Do not reveal private metrics, screenshots, customer data, or internal methods.

You can still describe a permitted deliverable: “Developed a reusable onboarding email system for a subscription business.” Confirm what you may disclose rather than assuming that anonymizing the name makes every detail safe.

Write evidence-based bullets

Begin with the client need or project context when it helps, then state your action and evidence. Use a number only when it is verifiable and permitted.

Without a reliable metric, name an accepted deliverable, launched feature, problem resolved, repeatable process, or accurately described scope. The guide to listing personal projects on a resume covers baselines and non-numerical evidence.

Freelance web developer

Role: Freelance web developer

Clients: Independent retail and service businesses

Dates: 2024–present

  • Built and maintained accessible marketing sites from approved requirements.
  • Reworked an inquiry form and documented its routing so staff could update recipients.
  • Tested responsive layouts and browser compatibility before client handoff.

This grouped format suits several related engagements. Link a portfolio only when it contains approved samples and explains your contribution.

Contract graphic designer

Role: Contract graphic designer

Client: Confidential education provider

Dates: February–June 2026

  • Created a modular report template for project updates.
  • Defined typography, chart, and image guidance for future reports.
  • Prepared accessible final files and editable source templates.

This separate entry gives a substantial engagement room without identifying the client.

Freelance content strategist

Role: Freelance content strategist

Client: Home-services company

Dates: August–November 2025

  • Audited service pages against questions supplied by the support team.
  • Developed content briefs and a review process for subject specialists.
  • Delivered approved copy and a maintenance guide.

The completed audit and workflow are useful evidence without an invented audience result.

Show overlapping dates clearly

Freelance work may overlap with employment, education, caregiving, or other clients. Accurate overlap is not an error. Keep the dates and add a truthful label such as “part time,” “selected projects,” or “weekends” when it clarifies the arrangement.

Example chronology:

  • Operations coordinator, full time: 2022–present
  • Freelance event photographer, selected weekends: 2024–present

Do not change dates to hide overlap or imply working hours you did not track.

Include a portfolio when it offers relevant, approved evidence. Confirm that every sample is yours to share, explain your part in collaborative work, remove private data, test the link while signed out, and lead with relevant finished work.

A portfolio is optional when work cannot be shared or samples add little. Specific bullets can still establish what you delivered.

Final review

Select engagements for the target role rather than listing every project. Label relationships and dates accurately, protect confidential information, and use evidence you can defend. Then follow the steps for tailoring your resume to a job description to choose the best examples for each application. In Better Resume, you can keep every client in one base resume and let each tailored copy lead with the projects that fit the role.
