How to add a portfolio link to your resume

Published , 5 min read

Put a portfolio link with your contact details near the top of your resume when it gives the employer relevant work samples you can share. Choose a page that makes those samples easy to find, use a readable URL, and test both the link in your final file and what a visitor can open.

Follow any separate portfolio or sample-upload instructions in the application too. A link in the resume does not replace a requested attachment. If a portfolio is optional and you have no useful samples ready, leave it off and describe your work clearly on the resume.

Choose a destination that supports this application

A portfolio shows the work behind a claim. It might contain writing, designs, software projects, photographs, or other material relevant to the role. Select your strongest relevant examples rather than sending the reader to an archive of everything you have made.

The destination can be a simple page with a few well-explained samples. A custom domain or elaborate website is not necessary. Check whether the employer wants a website URL, a particular file type, or individual samples before choosing how to share them.

Use a portfolio landing page when several samples help show your range. A page for one project can work when that project directly answers the request. Either way, the reader should be able to identify you, find the work, and understand your contribution without searching through unrelated posts.

Keep essential qualifications on the resume. A portfolio adds evidence, but a reader who does not follow the link should still understand what you did. For help choosing the details that belong on the page itself, use the resume tailoring guide.

Connect each sample to work you actually did

Morgan Ellis and the materials in this example are fictional. Morgan is applying for a help-center writing role. Their portfolio contains a public troubleshooting guide they wrote at work and a personal practice article about a fictional scheduling app. Their employer has approved sharing the guide.

Morgan could include this contact header. The example addresses are placeholders, not a live portfolio:

Morgan Ellis

Portland, OR · (503) 555-0142

morgan.ellis@example.com · portfolio.example.com/morgan

Illustrative contact header with a visible portfolio address.

The portfolio should explain what each piece represents. For Morgan's two samples, that context could read:

  • Account-access troubleshooting guide: Wrote the steps and revised them after a support lead's review. Shared with the employer's permission. Page design and illustrations were created by colleagues.
  • Scheduling-app help article: Personal writing exercise for a fictional app, created in September 2026. Wrote instructions for changing an appointment. Not commissioned or published by an employer.

Those descriptions distinguish writing from visual design and workplace experience from practice. The second sample can demonstrate how Morgan explains a task, but it cannot establish experience with a real product or its users.

On the resume, the practice piece could appear in a Projects section:

Scheduling-app help article — personal writing project

September 2026

  • Wrote instructions for changing an appointment in a fictional scheduling app, covering confirmation messages and cancellation options.
Illustrative project entry that labels the practice work explicitly.

Morgan should not turn that bullet into a claim about reduced support tickets. No customer use or measured result is part of the example. The personal projects guide covers choosing a section and describing what a project demonstrates.

For your own samples, identify the purpose, your role, and any collaborators. Label coursework, practice pieces, prototypes, and excerpts accurately. If a published version includes substantial editing by others, explain which work is yours rather than implying sole authorship of every element.

Check access and permission before sharing

Open the destination while signed out of the account you use to manage it. Follow the path to each featured sample. A homepage that loads successfully is not enough if its files require access the employer does not have.

Check the page on a phone too. Text, images, downloads, and navigation should remain usable. Fix broken links and replace links to your editing dashboard with the intended viewing address.

Share only material you are allowed to disclose. Removing a client name or adding a password does not by itself establish permission to share the remaining work. If permission is unclear, confirm it with the person responsible for approving disclosure before including the sample. You can use a clearly labeled personal exercise instead of exposing restricted work.

If the employer accepts private samples, follow their instructions for providing access. Do not include your account password. If a required portfolio cannot be shared through the form as requested, ask the employer how to provide it rather than submitting an inaccessible link or changing confidential material's visibility.

Add the URL in Better Resume and test the PDF

In Better Resume, open Contact and find Links. Choose Portfolio as the link type and enter the viewing URL. Use Add link if you need another row. The exported resume displays the address with your contact details and makes it clickable. It does not publish or host the portfolio itself.

Choose Preview, then Download PDF on the preview page. Open the downloaded file, read the displayed address, and click it. Check that it reaches the intended page and that its samples are accessible to the intended reader. A test in your own signed-in browser does not confirm that someone else can open the samples.

Before sending a resume with a portfolio

  • The destination contains work relevant to this application
  • Each sample identifies your contribution and any collaborators
  • Practice work, coursework, and excerpts are labeled accurately
  • You have permission to share every included item
  • The viewing URL and sample access work for the intended reader
  • The link works in the exact PDF you will send
  • Separate application fields and requested uploads are complete

After moving a sample or changing the portfolio address, update affected resume versions and export a fresh file. A readable contact link is useful only while it leads to the work you meant to share.

Make your work samples easy to find.

Add your portfolio URL to your contact details, preview your resume, and check the link in your downloaded PDF.
