Veterinary Assistant Resume Example and Writing Guide

Published , 5 min read

A veterinary assistant resume should name the animals and practice setting you know, then show your handling, care, cleaning, and recordkeeping work. Explain which tasks you performed and who directed or reviewed them. This example follows a dog and cat general-practice assistant whose earlier experience was in a boarding kennel.

Nia Holloway, her employers, school, and career history are fictional. Replace the sample details with your own work, training, and dates. The examples demonstrate resume wording, not animal-care procedures.

Summary

Veterinary assistant supporting dog and cat appointments in general practice since 2023, with earlier boarding kennel experience. Records owner-reported histories, assists with handling after clinic training, and follows written animal-care assignments. Documents observations and prepares labeled specimens for technician handoff.

Experience

Greywillow Animal ClinicRichmond, VA
Veterinary AssistantJan 2023 – Present
  • Confirm the pet and owner against the appointment record, weigh dogs and cats, and enter the owner's account of appetite, medications, and reason for the visit in the clinic record. Bring new concerns to the assigned technician before the examination.
  • Restrain dogs and cats for examinations and technician-performed blood collection using methods taught and checked by clinic staff. Tell the veterinarian or technician when an animal shows distress so the team can reassess handling. (note 1)
  • Follow the technician's written feeding, walking, and bedding assignments for stable hospitalized pets. Record food intake and elimination, and promptly report changes from earlier observations to the assigned technician. (note 2)
  • Clean and disinfect examination rooms and kennels between patients using procedures taught by clinic staff and the contact times on product labels. Keep soiled bedding separate from clean supplies and restock rooms for the next appointment.
  • Receive owner-delivered fecal samples, check patient identifiers and collection dates against the submission information, and flag missing details for the technician. Label and bag specimens under clinic instructions for laboratory handoff.

  1. Note 1:

Clinic training supports the handling claim. The technician performs the blood collection.

  2. Note 2:

Written assignments and reported observations define Nia's contribution to hospitalized-pet care.

  3. Note 3:

Boarding work supplies relevant animal-care evidence while keeping its original title and setting.

Make animal handling more specific than a skill label

Nia's resume names dogs and cats. It also identifies what the handling supported: examinations and blood collection. The blood collection was performed by a technician. That is more useful than “experienced with animals,” which could mean anything from pet ownership to specialized clinical work.

The bullet includes clinic training and a response to distress. It shows how Nia works with the clinical team without claiming that she can handle every animal or independently choose the next approach. On your resume, name the species, setting, and support you actually provided. Experience with boarding dogs does not establish experience handling horses, birds, or exotic pets.

  • Restrain dogs and cats for examinations and technician-performed blood collection using methods taught and checked by clinic staff. Tell the veterinarian or technician when an animal shows distress so the team can reassess handling.
Intake records and restraint under staff direction show two different contributions to a clinic visit.

If you held an animal while someone else collected blood, describe that assistance. Do not list blood collection as your own skill. Similarly, using calm handling methods does not establish a professional handling certification. Keep any earned credential separate from the work you learned on the job.

Distinguish an owner's account from your observations

During intake, Nia records what the owner reports about appetite, medications, and the reason for the visit. Later, she records what she observes while following a technician's care assignments. These are different sources of information, and the resume makes both visible.

“Monitored patients” would hide that distinction. Nia's care bullet instead names food intake, elimination, written assignments, and reports to the assigned technician. It does not imply that she diagnoses a condition, changes a feeding plan, or decides that a patient is ready to leave.

When describing your own care work, choose observations and records you can explain. Keep confidential owner information and identifiable patient records out of application materials. If your experience involves only boarding animals, describe that setting rather than borrowing the sample's hospitalized-pet wording.

The cleaning bullet adds another part of clinic support. Nia names examination rooms, kennels, soiled bedding, and restocking. Following a cleaning procedure is useful evidence on its own. It does not support a claim that she operated a sterilizer or prepared surgical instrument packs.

Show where specimen support ends

Nia receives fecal samples delivered by owners. Her work includes checking identifying information, flagging missing details, and preparing labeled specimens for handoff. The resume does not say she collected the sample from the animal, ran a test, or interpreted a result.

  1. Note 1:

Checking submission information and preparing a specimen are different from laboratory testing.

Care notes and specimen labels provide evidence without an invented clinical outcome.

“Assisted with laboratory work” can leave the reader guessing which stages you know. Name the sample type and your action. If you were trained and authorized to perform laboratory tests, describe the tests you actually performed. Do not use Nia's labeling bullet as evidence of testing competence.

You can write a useful resume without a patient-volume target or an error-reduction percentage. A recorded observation, a checked submission, or a prepared examination room shows completed work. Include a measured result only when you can explain what was counted, over what period, and what you contributed. The resume bullet guide shows how to work from evidence when reliable results are unavailable.

Present kennel experience and credentials under their real names

Nia earned her high school diploma in June 2019, started paid kennel work that August, and moved into the clinic in January 2023. Her earlier feeding, walking, cleaning, and care-card records explain the relevant foundation. They do not turn the kennel role into veterinary employment or move her clinic start date back to 2019.

If your animal-care experience comes from a shelter placement, volunteering, or caring for your own pets, label that relationship accurately. Explain the species, tasks, supervision, and records where relevant. Pet ownership alone does not establish clinical restraint, specimen handling, or hospital experience. Keep classroom practice separate from work performed with patients.

Nia has no professional credential, so the resume has no certification entry. If you hold NAVTA's Approved Veterinary Assistant (AVA) designation, use its exact name and verified current status. A school completion certificate or an exam preparation course is a different record. The certifications guide explains how to keep those distinctions clear.

Match the practice without expanding the sample's claims

Compare the opening's species, routine or emergency setting, responsibilities, training, and required qualifications with your own history. Nia's example supports general-practice assistance with dogs and cats. It does not demonstrate emergency triage, anesthesia monitoring, radiography, injections, laboratory testing, or a veterinary technician credential. Those remain gaps if a posting requires them.

For an opening centered on examination support, Nia could keep intake and handling first. For one emphasizing hospitalized-pet care, she could move her care-record bullet higher. Each of her seven listed skills has support in an experience bullet. The clinic system stays unnamed because this sample does not establish a particular software product.

Assistant titles in other care settings are not interchangeable. The medical assistant example describes human outpatient work, and the dental assistant example describes chairside support. Use their writing principles where helpful, while preserving your own patients, training, duties, and titles.
