Restaurant Server Resume Example and Writing Guide

Published , 6 min read

A restaurant server resume should show the service setting, how you take and deliver orders, and how you handle guest checks. Name the POS system you actually used and explain the communication behind a changed order or food allergy request. Add sales or service figures only when you can verify what they measure.

Keira Dawson and every employer, school, and resume detail below are fictional. She serves tables at an alcohol-free breakfast and lunch restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland, after nearly two years of paid dining room support work. Replace the sample facts with your own service experience, tools, dates, and credentials.

  1. Note 1:

Recording orders by seat connects the guest's order to food delivery and the eventual check.

  2. Note 2:

The bullet describes Keira's handoffs rather than promising an allergy-free meal.

  3. Note 3:

The earlier title stays accurate. Dining room support is relevant without being renamed as server employment.

A full-service restaurant resume with table orders, kitchen communication, payments, and earlier dining room support.

Put the menu and service setting in the story

Keira's summary identifies breakfast and lunch table service. Her menu bullet names plates and sandwiches, the pre-shift briefing, and ingredient questions she refers to the kitchen. That gives “menu knowledge” a basis an interviewer can explore. It also shows how she handles an answer she does not know.

Fine-dining restaurants, banquet venues, and counter-service cafes can ask for different experience. This resume does not demonstrate wine pairings, banquet setup, tableside preparation, or bartending. Keira should not add those skills simply because another restaurant asks for them. Her setting is useful context for deciding what transfers and what still needs training.

If you know your usual section size, that number can help explain your responsibility. Distinguish tables assigned at one time from guests served across an entire shift. This sample uses neither figure because its order and service details already explain the work. A restaurant's total seats or sales are not your personal workload or results.

Follow a table order from request to delivery

“Handled orders” leaves several questions unanswered. Keira confirms changes with the guest, records items by seat in Toast POS, and follows up when a side is missing or a dish is incorrect. The bullets describe different stages of the meal instead of repeating that she provides good service.

  • Serve food and nonalcoholic drinks, check back after meals arrive, and follow up with the kitchen on missing sides or incorrect dishes while keeping guests informed. (note 1)
  1. Note 1:

The missing side or incorrect dish gives the follow-up a concrete subject. Keeping the guest informed is part of the work, even without a timing claim.

Order details and follow-up show how Keira serves the table throughout the meal.

Name the changes and checks you actually handled. If you coordinated courses, worked with food runners, or checked orders at the pass, explain your own part. Do not turn delivering food into an unsupported claim that you supervised the kitchen or controlled every ticket time.

Allergy communication needs particular care in the wording. Keira records a guest-reported allergy, speaks with the kitchen lead, confirms the designated meal at pickup, and delivers it separately. Her resume describes her restaurant's procedure. It does not claim that removing an ingredient alone makes a dish safe or that a POS note replaces speaking with the kitchen.

  • Record guest-reported food allergies on the order, speak directly with the kitchen lead following restaurant procedure, and confirm the designated meal at pickup before delivering it separately to the guest.
The allergy bullet keeps the communication steps visible without claiming a guaranteed outcome.

Use your own training and responsibilities when describing this work. Do not add an allergy-handling claim based only on having seen a checkbox in the POS. The line cook example covers the kitchen side of preparation and service. Keira's evidence concerns the guest, the order, and communication with that team.

Explain split checks and the decisions you could make

Keira's payment bullet names an itemized check, splitting by seat, and cash and card payments. These details support Toast POS, split checks, and cash handling in her skills list. They do not establish responsibility for restaurant accounts, tip-pool calculations, or POS configuration.

Experience

Copper Finch KitchenBaltimore, MD
ServerJul 2023 – Present
  • Review itemized checks with guests, split checks by seat in Toast POS, accept cash and card payments, and refer requests for voids or complimentary items to the shift manager. (note 1)
  • Complete assigned side work by restocking cutlery and napkins, cleaning the beverage station, and confirming with the dining room attendant that tables are reset before new guests are seated.
  1. Note 1:

Keira takes payments but refers voids and complimentary items to a manager. Those are different levels of authority.

Payment work and assigned side work show responsibilities at the end of a meal and between tables.

Describe your own access accurately. Using a system to enter orders does not establish permission to issue refunds or change prices. If you used another POS, name that system. A practice session or training video should not become paid experience with Toast.

You can show useful work without claiming higher tips, faster table turns, or increased check averages. A confirmed modification, a split check, and completed side work are observable tasks. If you do have reliable sales figures, distinguish your individual sales from the team's and explain the period. Do not assign a restaurant-wide increase to your own suggestions. The bullet-point guide helps turn specific work into evidence without adding invented percentages.

Keep earlier work and training in proportion

Keira's dining room attendant role ran from August 2021 through June 2023. It shows table resets, water refills, service-station stock, and requests passed to a server. Her server role begins in July 2023. The earlier job does not claim order taking or payments, so the summary does not count every year as server experience.

For a first server application, use the guest contact and restaurant work you have actually done. Keep a host, busser, cashier, or volunteer title accurate. Explain relevant tasks underneath it and label unpaid work clearly. The retail sales associate example can help with transaction evidence, but store checkout alone does not establish table service.

The sample's ServSafe Food Handler Certificate was earned in May 2025 and has an illustrative May 2028 expiration. It is not ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification or an alcohol-service credential. List the exact award, issuer, and dates in your own records. Check the employer's instructions and local requirements, because acceptance and validity can vary. The certifications guide explains how to distinguish an earned credential from course enrollment.

Read each opening for its menu, style of service, required training, POS, and schedule. Keira's daytime restaurant experience does not promise current evening availability or establish alcohol-service training. Answer availability questions with the hours you can work. Use the tailoring guide to choose matching evidence while keeping missing experience visible.
