Put “Remote” in the location line of a job you performed remotely. You can add your base city, such as “Remote from Madison, WI,” when that context helps. For a role combining office and remote work, use a label such as “Chicago, IL (Hybrid).” Keep the employer, job title, and employment dates accurate.
If the arrangement changed during the job, add a short note with the relevant dates. A role that became remote halfway through should not read as though it was remote for the entire period.
Choose a location line that describes the work
There is more than one clear way to label remote experience. Choose the detail the reader needs:
- “Remote” describes a fully remote role without adding a city.
- “Remote from Madison, WI” identifies where you were based during that work.
- “Minneapolis office · Worked remotely” identifies the employer's office without claiming you worked there in person.
- “Chicago, IL (Hybrid)” identifies the office used for a role combining on-site and remote work.
If your base location changed during a remote role, do not use one city to represent the whole period unless you explain the change. You can use “Remote” alone when the cities are unnecessary.
Keep the work arrangement separate from the official job title. You do not need to rename “Customer Support Specialist” to “Remote Customer Support Specialist” to explain where you worked. If you name an office, identify it as the employer's office when its relationship to your location could be unclear.
Show a fully remote role with evidence of the work
Micah Patel and Cedarline Systems are fictional. Micah worked remotely from Madison, Wisconsin, throughout this job. The company's office was in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Micah handled support tickets and used a shared queue to hand unresolved cases to colleagues working later shifts.
Cedarline Systems
Remote from Madison, WI
Customer Support Specialist · January 2024–August 2026
- Answered account-access questions through email and chat using Zendesk.
- Recorded troubleshooting steps and unresolved questions in the shared ticket queue for colleagues on later shifts.
The location label establishes the arrangement. The second bullet shows what Micah recorded so colleagues could continue handling a case on a later shift. The entry does not claim team management, international collaboration, or a measured improvement in response time.
Choose details from your own work. A useful handoff bullet might name the status notes, shared document, or review process you maintained. Mention tools you actually used, and explain the task rather than filling a bullet with software names. The resume bullet guide can help turn those notes into specific evidence.
Date a change in work arrangement
Dalia Chen and Alderstone Supply are also fictional. Dalia held one Billing Assistant role at Alderstone Supply from June 2023 through August 2026. She worked at its Chicago office through December 2024, then worked remotely from Milwaukee beginning in January 2025. Her title and responsibilities did not change with the arrangement.
Alderstone Supply
Chicago, IL / Remote
Billing Assistant · June 2023–August 2026
On site in Chicago through December 2024. Remote from Milwaukee, WI, January 2025–August 2026.
- Checked invoice details against order records and sent discrepancies to the billing supervisor for review.
Dalia keeps the full employment period and explains the change underneath. A single “Hybrid” label would leave the timing unclear and could suggest a recurring mix of office and remote work. Calling it entirely remote would overstate her remote experience.
For an actual hybrid role, “Chicago, IL (Hybrid)” may be enough. Add a schedule only if it is relevant to the application and was true for the whole role. Occasional work-from-home days do not make an office role remote.
A change in arrangement alone does not require a new position entry. If you also changed jobs within the company, use the multiple-positions guide to preserve each role's dates and achievements.
Separate past experience from what you want next
Working remotely before and wanting a remote job now are different facts. Keep past arrangements tied to the roles where they happened. If you have not held a remote role, you can describe relevant collaboration without relabeling an office job as remote.
If you include a location in your contact details, use where you are based now. Follow the application's instructions for current-address, work-location, and availability questions. Read any stated region, office-attendance, and working-hours conditions. A past remote role does not establish that you meet the next employer's conditions. The address guide covers the contact header separately.
Enter the label and check the finished page
In Better Resume, open Experience and edit the relevant entry, or use “Add experience.” Keep your official title in “Job title” and the company name in “Employer.” Enter the arrangement in that entry's “Location” field. This is separate from Location in the Contact section.
For Dalia's example, enter “Chicago, IL / Remote” in the experience Location field. Keep June 2023 and August 2026 as the start and end dates. Put the arrangement note in “Description (Optional)” above the work bullet. Leave “Currently work here” unchecked because the job ended.
Open Preview, then choose “Download PDF.” Check that the location line fits, the arrangement note remains readable, and the employment dates still describe the full role.
Before you send a resume with remote experience
- Each remote or hybrid label describes the actual arrangement
- Named cities clearly refer to your base or the employer's office
- A change in arrangement has not inflated the remote-work period
- Bullets describe your own work and tools without invented results
- Application answers match your current circumstances and availability
